Programme Management for the Christopher Moller Gallery

The first thought that came to mind was; “How hard can it be?”

At this point only hearing about the logistics and operations of the art world, I thought it couldn’t be tougher than an event site or the like. Not that I’ve seen it all in the events world - but I have seen enough to qualify for hard-hitting Botox. Little did I know this industry is intensely passionate with way more mechanics behind the wheel than meets the eye.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT

Working side by side with the founders and curators - Christopher and Jaco -  it was clear their mission stood head and shoulders above the rest. Amongst the operational and logistical noise - the Christopher Moller Gallery (CMG) ‘brand’ had a unique story to this market.

The team prioritized the lasting bonds and connection with the artist, client, and art piece; they were in this with you for a lifetime - and this was the magic when working with both Christopher & Jaco. You knew they were with you in the curation of your art collection, on your artistic journey, or in the pure logistical process of shipping art to the final destination.

BOUTIQUE AND LUXURY BRANDING

We set out to create a visual identity that spoke about trust - but was classic and seamless, truly - the art had to do the talking. The best way we could capture their ethos and brand values around the buyer's journey was for the owners to tell it themselves. No point in having clever copy but to meet your curators, meet the team who will see it through over and over again.

To keep momentum - we created a robust annual calendar and exhibition program. The consistent showcase created a machine-like operation but with a curated style to it. Keeping things boutique on a very grand scale.

KEY JOURNEY PROJECTS

True to their core - this Gallery is in it for the long haul. We often see galleries working and representing artists for years - but here I could see the raw investment the CMG founders had into their artist’s development and career. Their commitment to the art community showed in great measure with the evolution of Dennis Osadebe and Tony Gum from their stable. Both came from debut status with CMG - we unpacked their evolution into complex mediums and features years after their first exhibition.

In the end, I stayed to see the magic for almost  3 years with the team - It was the most beautiful time.  It held various elements to the game I love; Annual program and Calendar Program Management, brand evolution, and applications to both the business and for creative artists.
Not to forget a good dash of business strategy to cement these discussions.

The bottom line - good galleries showcase good art.

But the greatest galleries invest in the artist's journey, walk the extra mile, and show up in the most unexpected ways. This team is the Christopher Moller Gallery, curating the finest of Contemporary African Art, in the heart of Cape Town to the international art community.
