Challenge the craft for Dennis Osadebe - Creative Projects

BE THE EYES AND ‘HANDS’

While consulting with the Christopher Moller Gallery, Dennis Osadebe, an artist from their stable, was investigating and developing a new body of work using new mediums - uncharted territory so to speak. What many don’t know is that creating these pieces sometimes means sourcing the best craftsmanship in other parts of the world - you seek and work with the best to create the best. In this case, Dennis’s refinery was based in Cape Town while he was based in Nigeria. Even with the best technological Zoom feat we have, thanks to COVID-19, Dennis struggled to be part of each step to ensure his exact vision came to life.

THE CREATION - ‘HOPE IS ACTION’

Known for his work in the mixed medium space, Dennis wanted to go “3D” and crafted his first bronze piece - called Hope is Action. It’s about a 22 inches tall piece and stands in bold metallic colours and wavy texture - very unique to the bronze field. Even with this size at play - the devil was in the details and we kept pushing for the smallest of touches to ensure real vision coming to life.

CHALLENGE THE PROGRESS

With each phase of development, we had to scrutinize the progress and minute elements - what required refinement, redevelopment, or reassessment. I’ve worked with many prestigious and world-renowned brands who would have long given up or settled on a few things in this process. But Dennis’s tenacious commitment to creating raw perfection was what kept progress alive.

ART LAUNCH

At the end - after almost a 14 month period of production and crafting, we had to set the stage of launching the first ever Osadebe bronze. Being such a potent brand himself, the offset would have to hold Osadebe-like gravitas, but still leave room for the piece itself to shine. (Almost as if you’re merging 2 brands with the same tonality but needing their own identity to it.

It was an honour to work alongside Dennis Osadebe in this process - I met him during his debut at Christopher Moller Gallery in 2019 to work alongside him for Hope is Action in 2022. I’m lucky to now own one of his prints, which is a special reminder of the evolution of his work and has played a very small role in it.
